Crospovidone is an insoluble, cross-linked form of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) used primarily as a superdisintegrant and, in some contexts, as a stabilizer or adsorbent. Its three-dimensional cross-linked structure provides high capillary activity and water uptake without forming a gel, which makes it extremely effective at promoting rapid tablet and capsule disintegration at low concentrations.
Crospovidone – Cross-Linked PVP Superdisintegrant & Stabilizer from TCS GROUP is supplied in grades optimised for immediate-release tablets, orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs), capsules and nutraceuticals. When in contact with water, crospovidone rapidly wicks fluid into the matrix and swells, causing mechanical stress that breaks the compact apart. Because it does not gel, it maintains open channels for fluid penetration and can deliver particularly fast disintegration, even in high-dose or poorly soluble API formulations.
Crospovidone is often used together with other key excipients from the TCS INDUSTRIES LIMITED portfolio, such as:
- Croscarmellose Sodium – Superdisintegrant for Rapid Tablet Disintegration – another cross-linked superdisintegrant based on cellulose chemistry; combining CCS and crospovidone can create robust disintegration performance across different media.
- Calcium Hydrogen Phosphate Dihydrate – DCPD Filler & Mineral Source – a compressible mineral filler that benefits from crospovidone’s rapid disintegration capability, especially in high-load tablets.
- Colloidal Silicon Dioxide – Glidant, Anti-Caking Agent & Adsorbent – improves flow, reduces sticking and enhances uniformity in blends that also contain crospovidone.
In addition to its pharmaceutical use, crospovidone is recognised as PVPP (polyvinylpolypyrrolidone) in beverages, where it functions as a stabilizer and clarifying agent by binding polyphenols and haze-forming components. This cross-industry versatility highlights its safety and functionality profile.
Typical use levels in tablets are around 2–5% w/w, though lower levels may be effective depending on formulation design. The excipient is compatible with a wide variety of APIs and manufacturing processes, including direct compression, wet granulation and roller compaction.
With TCS GROUP as a partner, formulators gain access to high-quality crospovidone supported by application data and technical expertise, enabling the development of fast-disintegrating, patient-friendly oral dosage forms.
