Applications
Cidofovir is approved for the intravenous treatment of CMV retinitis in patients with AIDS. It is administered as an intravenous infusion with concurrent probenecid and intravenous saline prehydration to reduce nephrotoxicity, which is the principal dose-limiting side effect. Off-label, intralesional and topical cidofovir has been used for recalcitrant viral warts, molluscum contagiosum, and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). It also has activity against adenovirus, polyomavirus (BK virus), and poxviruses including smallpox (variola).
