Hard fat is a semi-synthetic mixture of saturated triglycerides designed as a stable, well-defined lipophilic base for suppositories and certain topical or oral solid dosage forms.
It exhibits sharp melting profiles close to body temperature, providing rapid melting and release of active drugs without leaving irritating residues.
Hard fat offers good oxidative stability, compatibility with many lipophilic APIs, and reliable molding and demolding performance in industrial production.
It is widely used as a pharmacopeial-grade suppository base (e.g. Witepsol-type) for rectal and vaginal dosage forms and can also serve as a structuring agent in ointments and creams.
